Job Summary:
The OSP (Outside Plant) Fiber Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, splicing, and repair of fiber-optic cables and related infrastructure in the ISPs outside plant network. This role involves working outdoors in various environments, including urban, suburban, and rural areas, to ensure the optimal performance and reliability of the ISP’s fiber network. The technician will work closely with network engineers, construction teams, and other technical staff to ensure efficient deployment and maintenance of fiber infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Fiber Installation and Maintenance: - Install, splice, terminate, and test fiber-optic cables for new construction projects and existing network expansions. Perform troubleshooting and repair of damaged fiber-optic cables.
  • Cable Splicing: - Perform fusion splicing of fiber optic cables to ensure continuous network integrity and minimal signal loss. Use appropriate equipment and techniques for both single-mode and multi-mode fibers.
  • Network Testing and Troubleshooting: - Utilize various testing equipment (OTDR, power meter, light source) to test and certify fiber-optic links and identify faults or impairments in the network.
  • Documentation: - Maintain accurate records of fiber splicing, terminations, and installations. Update network documentation, splice diagrams, and as-built documentation as needed.
  • Adherence to Safety Standards: - Follow all safety protocols and guidelines to ensure safe working conditions in various environments, including near traffic, in confined spaces, and at heights. Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Route Planning and Design: - Assist in planning and designing fiber-optic routes for new network builds, upgrades, and repairs. Work with engineers and project managers to ensure accurate execution of network plans.
  • Field Surveys and Inspections: - Conduct site surveys to determine the best placement of fiber-optic cables and related infrastructure. Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with engineering standards and customer specifications.
  • Emergency Response: - Respond to network outages, fiber cuts, and other emergencies promptly to restore service. Coordinate with other teams and departments to minimize downtime.
  • Collaboration: - Work closely with OSP Engineers, Construction Teams, and other technical personnel to ensure seamless network deployment and maintenance. Provide input and feedback to improve processes and procedures.
  • Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance: - Maintain and care for company vehicles, tools, and equipment. Ensure all equipment is in proper working order and report any issues promptly.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Technical certification or associate degree in Telecommunications, Fiber Optics, or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience working with fiber-optic cables and outside plant (OSP) installations. Prior experience with ISP or telecommunications providers is preferred.
  • Proficiency in fiber-optic splicing, termination, and testing techniques.
  • Familiarity with using OTDR, fusion splicers, power meters, and other fiber testing equipment.
  • Understanding of OSP construction methods, standards, and best practices.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and practices for working in OSP environments.
  • Relevant certifications such as Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT), OSHA 10/30, or other industry-specific certifications are preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and in various outdoor environments.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Must have a valid Georgia Driver’s License.
  • Must pass GreyStone Power’s pre-employment physical, criminal background check, and reference check.

Physical Demands (if applicable):
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions. Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces. Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and on-call shifts as required.
